The Best Time to Quit (or Stick) When you’re Stuck

People talk about making big moves but miss the most important part — the timing.

Careers, business, and life have highs and lows.

When it’s time to make a big move or a big decision, the worst time to do it is when you’ve taken a big loss.

Momentum matters.

The best time to make that big move is while you’re “winning.”

Examples:

  • The best time to get a new job is while you’re producing results (not while you’re in the middle of a low).
  • The best time to negotiate is when you have options (not when you’re desperate).

But what about when you’re stuck?

If you aren’t doing well, and don’t have options, how do you decide whether to quit or to stick?

Creating Momentum

Without momentum, there can be no big moves.

The force generated by the distance you’ve covered until now adds to your overall power. Starting from a standstill is tough. Starting your new job while already crushing is easier.

Generating that first bit of momentum is the hard part.

Three factors in generating momentum.

  • When work doesn’t produce results, love for what you do will create momentum.
  • Even the smallest “win” means something; small wins create momentum.

Again, the best time to make that big move is while you’re “winning.”

Recognizing When You’re Stuck

Sometimes, it’s easy to miss what is actually making you feel stuck. Here are a few possibilities (and how to address them):

  • Don’t know what to do (a little research goes a long way).
  • Don’t do anything (set one priority and get to it first thing in the morning).
  • Have too many things to do and can’t decide (start with one thing, then add).

Remember that small wins create momentum and that you want to make a move while you have that momentum.
